Modern Foreign Languages

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.  If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”.  (Nelson Mandela)

Ever-expanding communication technology, increased travel opportunities and changing flexibility in the job market have resulted in the world becoming a much smaller place. It is crucial that we can speak with and understand each other.

Our vision for language learning is to provide vibrant and well-resourced lessons which instil a passion and curiosity for language learning and enable pupils to access employment, leisure and travel opportunities beyond the confines of the Anglo-American world.

An A Level GCE in French or German will teach you to communicate at a higher level in the language you choose to study, as well as devloping general study, independent learning and research skills. Students have the chance to learn much more about a wide, varied and interesting range of aspects of the societies in which the language is spoken.

Students need to feel confident in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and have knowledge of and interest in the culture and way of life of the target language countries. Familiar topics are studied in much more depth and new topics such as the digital world, immigration, cultural life and historical and contemporary topics related directly to France and Germany are covered.

Examples of employment where language skills are particularly valued include journalism and media, engineering, marketing, travel and tourism, customer service, the Civil Service (diplomatics service, customs and excise, immigration) and teaching, both in the UK and abroad.
