Sixth Form

With a strong support network in place for them, students can take responsibility for their own learning in the Sixth Form. It prepares them for adult life – university, career and personal growth and achievement.

Ambitious and enterprising students work hard while developing leadership skills. Dynamic and innovative teaching and learning, together with small class sizes, reinforce The Peterborough School’s commitment to ensuring every student achieves his or her best.

Small tutorial groups of around ten students from both year groups allow students to work closely with and get to know their tutor very well. The ethos throughout is hardworking, friendly and supportive, with everyone aiming to get the best results possible for every student.

Enrichment Programme

In tutorial sessions and in one dedicated teaching period every week, Sixth Formers have personal, social, health and economic education (PSHEE) lessons to broaden their curriculum and allow them to consider and discuss issues relating to their personal and social development. A broad range of topics is covered, aiming to give education for life.

All Sixth Formers undertake a further enrichment programme that includes a structured volunteering programme, the completion of an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and an electives programme that might include activities such as the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Gold Crest Award in Science or an arts based award.

Curriculum

The challenging curriculum offers a wide range of 20 subjects with a focus on traditional academic subjects. They include: art and design (including fine art, art textiles and photography), biology, business studies, chemistry, dance, drama and theatre studies, economics, English literature, geography, graphic products, history, mathematics and further mathematics, French, German, music, physical education, philosophy & ethics (RS), physics and psychology.

Following government reforms to the assessment structure of A Levels, from September 2016 we moved away from AS and A2 modular courses and instead, students at The Peterborough School now ordinarily study three linear A Levels over two years.  At the end of the two years they will be examined in each subject and this final assessment will be worth 100% of the final A Level grade.

Further Learning

There are many and varied positions of responsibility and extra-curricular activities include debating, Young Enterprise, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, youth council, the Charities Committee, choirs and orchestra and House events.

Independent students need their own spaces. They have a dedicated study area in addition to access to the Learning Resource Centre and IT Suite. The Common Room provides a suitable leisure space for relaxation and is equipped with new furniture, a TV, a Wii, an iPod dock and kitchen facilities.
