PAMELA EVANS (WEST) – Class of 1950
I did one year at Lincoln Training College when the
Principal suggested I went to work in Nursery Schools in
Birmingham which I enjoyed very much. The Director of
Studies then called me into his office and said they were
having to close quite a few schools. He suggested that
I was too highly educated to be a nursery attendant.
Mrs Belgion heard about my problem and suggested I
became an assistant matron. I thought I would give this
a try. The first school I worked at was a girls’ school as
Junior Matron. Then Mrs Belgion wrote and asked me to
go back to Westwood House. I jumped at the idea as I
had been very happy as a boarder. Sadly, it didn’t work
out as Mrs Belgion still treated me as one of the pupils. I
then started to work in a Boys’ Prep School and really
enjoyed it – the boys were such fun. I worked at three
different schools over the years until I left to get married.
We had a Guest House in the New Forest for nine and a
half years. I have now moved to Bury St Edmunds to be
near my nephew and his family.

MARGARET SCOTT – Class of 1952
I do not think I will ever be able to visit the school again
because of the distance and ill health. I have not had paid
work since moving down to Cornwall nearly 33 years ago.
I have had to stop all my volunteering work. I have five
nieces and nephews – Marcus has a partner and two little
girls, Petra has a boy and is a teacher in the Outback,
Giles is a tree surgeon and two other nieces who both
have children.

SHEILA HARDY (DONALD) – Class of 1954
Sad news from me – my dear husband, John, died in July,
2015. He was 88 and had really enjoyed life and achieved
more than he ever dreamt he might. After an operation for
a broken hip, he had a stroke so couldn’t stand or hold on
to a zimmer. He told us that he was content then to go,
and he died a few days later. Our daughter, Carolyn
(Adcock) and her daughter have decided to come and live
here, so we are splitting my large bungalow in order to
create a granny-flat alongside her part.

I took my A Levels in 1968 at Huntingdon Technical
College. Then I had 23 gap-years, bringing up family and
caring for a disabled mother. During the 90s I worked in
an Antiquarian bookshop in Cambridge whilst studying
with Open University and gained my Certificate to teach
English as Foreign Language with RSA. In 2000 I gained
a Ist Class honours degree and in 2004 Licentiate of
Trinity College, London (TESOL). Between 2000 and
2014, I worked in Language Schools teaching English to
foreign adults and running a programme to develop their
academic skills (reading, researching, attending lectures
and note-taking and summarising). Since 2014, I have
been an Examiner with Cambridge Assessment marking
university and medical school admission essays (TSA &
